Electricity production in the U.S. has grown dramatically since the beginning of the century, and demand seems likely to increase. Every so often, large-scale failures remind Americans of how vital freely flowing electricity is to daily life.

Houses use lots more energy than cars. Maybe we need a cash for clunkers program for energy-hog housing. It's ridiculous to keep building housing that ignores free passive solar energy and is not well-insulated.
