As the 65th College Photographer of the Year (CPOY) competition wraps up, Powering a Nation has plenty of reasons to celebrate. The site won Gold in the "Large Group Multimedia" category. Also, Spilling Over (already featured by the Washington Post,  LA Times and NPR) won Gold in "Multimedia Project," preceding Power Play, another UNC | News21 project. Finally, Splitting Main Street won an Award of Excellence in the same category. Here's the complete list of winners.

Spilling Over focuses on the impact of the BP oil spill on the life of the community of Venice, La., located just 50 miles away from the Deepwater Horizon rig. The package shows how the spill has put the livelihood of the residents in danger.

Power Play addresses Detroit's transition from the automotive industry to the lesser-known alternative energy industry; as the city attempts to reinvigorate a failing economy, a handful pioneer entrepreneurs have a chance to spark change.

Splitting Main Street tackles the controversial topic of nuclear energy by documenting the ongoing debate in the communities near Vermont Yankee (VT) and Plant Vogtle (GA) nuclear power plants.

Kudos to our fearless reporters who spent countless days (and nights) on the road and the editing room to produce these beautiful packages.
