"It's funny watching people have their picture taken. The moments before, so much happens in their faces, so many different expressions. And then they shoot the photo and you realize that the picture is kind of bland compared to everything that happens right before and after it."
Glass' quote sums up the idea of a video portrait. Basically, what they convey is those few seconds previous and after of a photo—that spontaneity that usually gets ruined in the countdown.
Capture more than just a frame. Don't freeze life; capture it in its totality.
Every time I look at a multimedia story I'm looking for the visual things that make them special. It can be either long time exposures, time-lapses, aerial shots, dolly shots, etc. The creative usage of the camera in general catches my eye right away.
Let's face it, there's a ton of multimedia been produced -mostly of poor quality- but still a lot. So, every little thing that can make your story visually rich in order to differentiate from the rest is good.
That said, it's important not to lose the most relevant part of a story. The story itself, the audio that carries through a piece. Sure, it's fun to look at stories that have a lot of visuals and that's visually creative, but if the audio quality is bad or the story is not compelling, that's it. The user will leave. The user tends to be forgiving if the video or photo quality is not great, but if the audio is bad they won't look at the story we spent producing, shooting and editing for days.
Having mentioned that, there's also room to have fun and try new things. Here's some footage that I shot a few days ago with "The Gripper", a suction cup with a tripod mount.
I just got a new toy. A Canon TC 80N3, a really cool intervalometer.
What is this? Basically it's a programmable remote control for your photo camera in which you can set up the camera to take stills automatically in a determinate interval of time; use it as a remote control; do extra long exposures (for astrophotography) and many other uses.
I'm gonna be using it to do some time-lapsing of sun sets or sun rises in Roscoe, Texas, one of the biggest wind farms in the world. I'm just trying to get a In the footage you can get a glimpse of our newsroom.
And yes, that was a dog. Her name's Pepper. She's our mascot.
